Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The author is an undergraduate student at Northeastern University, and the material being submitted was created for a course taught at Northeastern University. Writers in First-Year Writing or Advanced Writing in the Disciplines especially encouraged to submit.
  • The material being submitted is the author's original work, and any necessary permissions have been obtained.
  • All identifying information has been removed from the submission, to ensure the author's anonymity during review.

Author Guidelines

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Eligibility:  Undergraduate students currently enrolled at Northeastern University may submit compositions made for a course taught at Northeastern University. Writers in First-Year Writing or Advanced Writing in the Disciplines especially encouraged to apply.

Formatting: Submissions may be of various lengths. Submissions may be in "traditional" journal-article format or may be multimodal. Multiple citation styles are acceptable: MLA, APA, Chicago, etc. The format and citation style must be appropriate for the content, audience, and genre. 

Process: Students submit their work to the journal online. NU Writing uses a blind review process (meaning that students’ identities remain unknown to editors as they decide which compositions to publish).

Authors are responsible for the originality of their material and for obtaining any necessary permissions before publication in NU Writing. 

Review criteria:

1) Is the work relevant for today? Does the work engage with contemporary sources, pressing issues at a local or global level, or the current experiences of people?

2) Does the work show critical thinking? Is the work engaging with genre in new ways, presenting a strong argument, or entering conversations with compelling ideas?

3) Does the work show that the author has awareness of genre by adhering to genre conventions or thoughtfully breaking conventions?

4) Is the work engaging to the reader through its content, organization, and style?

5) Is the work easy to read, meaning that it is cohesive, clear, and has minimal errors that impede comprehension?

Authors retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication, with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgment of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal.

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.
